View Full Version : Jonathan: No Video or Audio - Please Help

Jonathan,

I am using WXP with a Logitech QuickCam Messenger. Same
for a friend AND my wife's laptop in the next room. We
are all using WXPHE. We all have both Messenger 4.7 and
5.0 (for XP)loaded. I have updated the firmware on my
Linksys Router to accept PunP or whatever that is called.
I have shut down the firewalls on all machines. We are
all using broadband. We can all instant email each other,
but we are unable to see video or hear sound.

When I attempt to initiate a video conversation, the
video screen and controls shows up in the upper right
hand corner of my screen, but it is blank (kind of black
with the outline of the Messenger logo faintly in the
background). My friend receives the invitation to begin
the video conference and accepts it --- then NOTHING
happens until it all disconnects a minute later. No
video, no audio, nada!

It all works just fine when we use Yahoo, but Yahoo is so
damn slow and cumbersome.

I am sooooo frustrated. I am pretty good with computers.
I have read all the help I can get from both Logitech and
Messenger websites. What am I doing wrong? I have been
working on this steadily for three days and I am about to
simply give up. Why must this be so difficult? Why
doesn't the Microsoft Website answer these questions? Why
no SIMPLE directions? Yahoo took about two minutes to
work successfully.

Please help me!

Greetings John,

Actually, in the newer versions of Messenger coming out, there's going to be plenty more
information, easier connectivity options and testing which we don't have established yet.

First thing to check is, if you haven't already rebooted your PCs since you updated the
firmware on the Linksys router, do so.

Secondly, run through the Audio Tuning Wizard again (open the main Messenger window, click
the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard) and go through the wizard.

Thirdly, you might try removing the UPnP forwardings which have already been added, click
Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the
"Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties.
Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete'
to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart
Messenger and try a voice/video conversation again.

Finally, is your friend using a router as well? If so, it's not enough that just one side
has UPnP support, both sides will need it (or have a direct connection).

Thanks so much for the response. I will give these issues
a try this weekend and let you know. My wife's laptop is
on the same router that I am using. I did run the upnp
update on it, but I can't remember if I rebooted. My
friend is NOT using a router.
