Windows XP Help:

I periodically back up my files onto a CD-RW Disk and it works well to a
point. The process involves overwriting the previous backup. After several
such cycles, I can no longer write to the disk. I can open the files but I
can't overwrite them.

On my son's advice, I backed up onto a new CD-RW Disk and it works well. He
also told me that I can erase the original disk and it can be used again.
When I tried doing this I discovered that all my files are "Read Only" and,
as such, cannot be deleted.

How do delete "Read Only" files from my CD-RW Disk?

Bernie: I believe you are writing to the disk with DLA (Direct Letter
Access) and once the files are written to the disk they are read only. You
cannot delete individual files, but you can reformat the disk to make the
disk usable again.

In order to write and delete individual files to the CD/RW you will need
packet writing software such as Nero or Roxio.

Try this:

With the RW Disk in the drive you use to do the writing, open My Computer,
right-click on the drive and see if there is an option to "Erase this
CD-RW".
