View Full Version : Explorer Crashes with really long file names...

Hi,
I'm running XP Professional, and if I create a folder called
"A_very_very_very_long_folder_name", and in that create another called
"Sub1_a_very_very_very_long_folder_name", and in that another, for a few
levels, and then try and copy a really long filename into the last
sub-folder, my Explorer crashes (several times!!).
Any idea what the maximum length for this is? I'm doing some tests for our
software to see if it can handle long names, but it seems even Windows has a
limit.
Thanks,
Alain

That bug is usually a Symantec anti-virus app error.

Hi Mark,
Just to confirm, this is not an anti-virus crash as far as I can tell. This
really is the Windows Explorer crashing. Try it. Explorer actually crashes 3
times!! Fortunately, MS have worked out how to prevent the BSOD here.
I did have an anti-virus software program by McAfee, but even when I shut
that down and stopped all services related to the AV software, Explorer
still crashes.

Alain
