I have MSN Messenger 5.0 and do prefer to use it rather
than 4.7.But for some reason it (4.7)keeps trying to
connect. It's becoming very irritating, keeps setting off
alerts on firewall, hour glass on pointer curser keeps
flashing. Have set 4.7 to not connect at startup, donot
run in background and still it keeps trying. When I go to
add/remove,all that is showing is 5.0. However it is(4.7)
in start/all programs list,as well as 5.0. Can someone
give me a suggestion on how to deal or fix this. Thank
you in advance.

Greetings,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thank you for your reply...I did as you suggested and
will try this out. Yes I do have 2003 Norton Antivirus.
Now that messenger is turned off in Norton,my next
question is will it still scan my e-mails as I use I MSN
Messenger to chat on contact list and receive and send e-
mails. Thank you again for your prompt reply.

Hi,

Yes it will still scan, this feature just turns off the automatic scanning of files when you
receive them via Messenger (presumably you'll most likely run the file anyway, and Norton
will scan it then, so you really don't loose anything).
