View Full Version : Exit Failure in Windows Messenger

I use Windows Messenger. However, there are times when I'd
like to exit the program. When I right-click the icon in
my system tray and select "exit" I get a message telling
me that there are other applications using features
provided by Messenger. That I must close these
applications before I can exit. And, that these programs
include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and
Internet Explorer. None of these programs are running,
however. This is also a fairly new development, and I
suspect that Window's Automatic Updating has something to
do with it. I can force Messenger to close
using "Ctrl"+"Alt"+"Delete", however I'd rather not rely
on this method. Hopefully someone can tell me how to fix
Messenger so it will exit on command.

Greetings Rich,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
