I don't want messenger auto starting when I make a dialup
connection or connect to a lan. I don't want to
permanently disabled, I just don't want it starting
itself. In other words I want some control over my "user
experience". How is this done on xp pro?

Greetings Bob,
There are a few ways to stop this from happening.
The first is to stop Windows Messenger from loading at startup -- to do so, open the main
Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences, uncheck 'Run this
program when Windows starts' and click OK. You can then start it whenever you want by
clicking Start, then All Programs and then Windows Messenger.
The second method is to just remove your automatic saved login (so you'll have to type in
your login/password each time). To do this, click the Start Button, then click the Control
Panel. Then, click User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select the account name currently
signed in, and then on the left side of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my
Network Passwords'. In the window that opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and
click 'Remove'.
