child windows won't open

Hi.

I have WINXP on my computer at home, and whenever I click
on a link that opens up a new window (for example, when I
click on "Post Reply" or "new post" I get a clear window
with a title bar that says Microsoft (or Internet
Explorer) and the window doesn't load. Someone told me
about a Java virus going around, but I'm not sure if
that's what it is. The same thing happens when I try to
play a video clip off of Yahoo's Launch, or preview a
movie off of MSN. Even if I'm on Wincustomize.com trying
to look at wallpapers, I click on the thumbnail to get a
bigger picture, and all I get is the clear window. Any
feedback would be great. Thanks
