Does anybody have any opinions on which Anti Virus
software is best suited to XP

Maurice, all I can tell you, is that I had terrible experience with McAfee
Online Antivirus, I installed in both my Pc's with Win XP Home, only to
have to do complete Recovery after the Uninstall.
I now use Norton and have had no problems at all.

Interesting, I had to do the same after Uninstall of McAfee. I now use
Norton, and haven't had any problems. Also on XP Home edition.

I have used Nortons from a package, Mcafee from a package, AVG, Thunderbyte
and PC-Cillin. Out of the lot of them, the last one I bought and keep using
is Mcafee Virusscan Online. The reason for this is that it not only RELIABLY
works WELL on newer machines, it also works well on 486s with WIN98, too!
I have installed Mcafee Virusscan ONLINE version on many machines, since and
not one prob even once.

Love to know what you did wrong. I have had complete newbies install the
same software after asking me which one to put on and never a problem.

I've been very happy with Symantec's Norton Internet Security,
which includes Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, parental
controls, privacy controls, and ad blocking. (Just the elimination of
most pop-up ads on the Internet make the price worth-while.) Never
had an infection or an intrusion, nor any other kind of problems
attributable to Symantec products.
(It's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they
were acquired by Network Associates.)

What I use did not cost me a dime,I get free updates and the damn thing =
works.

The problem with that statement from you, mate, is the fact that you haven't
touched any Mcafee product "in years". I could point you to security site
announcements about problems with Nortons AND Mcafee products.
As you haven't tried any Mcafee product in years, you cant have tried Mcafee
Virusscan Online. If it is true you haven't tried it, then you cant really
be 100% reliable on Mcafee Virusscan Online can you? Suggest you try it out
mate. I find the Mcafee boxed versions and the Nortons versions ALL slow the
machine down even when configured correctly. Mcafee Virusscan Online doesn't
do that and the reason it doesn't is that they got wise to the idea that
people ARE still using their OLD machines as main machines and they are
losing money because of that. Nortons have finally woken up to that, too. I
hope they ALSO have a similar product out, soon, that is nice to older
machines and works great on newer ones.

The OP asked for an opinion, and that's what he got.
Just because I haven't been tempted by McAfee products doesn't
mean I haven't been exposed to them while servicing/repairing other
peoples' PCs. No, I haven't specifically tried McAfee's Virusscan
Online; but based on several years experience with their other
products, I'm still not tempted to.
The primary reason I've not been tempted to more fully evaluate
McAfee's products is that I've never had a bit of trouble from Norton
AV, either on my personal machines or any of the hundreds of machines
I maintain at work, nor have I experienced any noticeable performance
penalty (except during a full system scan); in other words, I've had
no real reason or need to look elsewhere.
I do recognize that _no_ software product is perfect, and that a
product that works well under one set of conditions may not work at
all under different circumstances. Each user must evaluate the
product under his/her own unique circumstances to determine which
product best meets his needs.

Touche Bruce! I dumped McAfee years ago when Network Associates bought
them and their product quality took a nose dive. Went to Norton and
haven't had a bit of trouble since the switch. Norton has made the
updates pretty easy with their Live Update feature. And I haven't had
any problem at all, with virus scans. Haven't had a desire to try McAfee
again.

Then you simply cant be trusted on this issue, then, mate. You arent
impartial. If you havent tried "Online" then you dont have any idea how good
it is and that shows your impartiality on this. How about you try it before
denigrating Mcafee products as a whole? I am no great big supporter of
Mcafee or Nortons to put one over the other. I just happen to know that the
ONLINE Mcafee works better than any previous Mcafee virus scanner and better
than any current Nortons one and yes *I* have tried the lot for many years
now. While saying that and acknowleding that there are holes in both Nortons
AV and Mcafee ones, I am not actually referring so much to that as to the
ability to be USED without noticeable degradation of system performance.
Older Mcafee previous to ONLINE and all Nortons AV do that. If I were forced
to say which one I would use purely on who lets the most through and who
doesnt, it is a toss-up.

I have had trouble with Mcafee, admittedly, prior to Online when I went to
XP. Nobody thought to recommend we uninstall 5.x prior to upgrading and that
was a damned nuisance. Further, I had to BUY 6.x when I still had time left
on 5.x and there was no upgrade path or cheaper buy price because of that.
So, you can see I am not hiding facts. Quite simply, though, Nortons AV to
this day degrade system performance a lot more than Mcafee ONLINE version
does. Previous versions to ONLINE degraded performance about the same as
Nortons does. However, your comment about "no real need to look elsewhere"
makes me jump, mate. I am not trying to sound nasty but you gave advice out
that was clearly biased by what you say. If you had at least TRIED Online
version and for whatever reason didnt like it, fair enough but you admit you
hadnt and that really is unfair of you considering your word in this
newsgroup is worth a lot more to peopel who read it than quite a lot of
others.

I would advise you to go try the online version mate. You may not like it in
the end but at least you will have firsthand knowledge of it's capabilities.

Suggest you don't get stuck on a brand name and give serious thought to your
choice of AV. Sticking with one product because it was good years ago isn't
really a good idea. If we all had that same thought, we would all be on
Amigas.

I switched years ago to Norton from McAfee and
have had no trouble until installing xp pro. Had
trouble installing first time, and when it did
install would not protect real time, great
product, but am having a problem currently. am
using fprot in the meantime. NAV2003

IF you are willing to pay you cannot go wrong with Norton. If you don't
want to spend the $$$ AVG is a good alternative. McAfee is the Ford
Pinto of AV software!!

From experience I can reccommend Norton 2002 and 2003.
NAV 2003 has scanning of Instant Messangers and scans winzip version 9 beta
(goto http://download.com.com/3000-2250-10202904.html?tag=spdl for a free
download of Winzip 9 Beta)
