View Full Version : XP Spooler won't allow printing

I'm running XP Home SP1, and recently I had to repair the installation using
the original DVD (also re-installing SP1 and all of the MS updates). Since
then, I've been unable to print to either my Kyocera FS-680 (on LPT1) or my
Epson Stylus C20UX (connected via USB) unless the printer properties
"advanced" page has the "Print directly to the printer" option selected,
rather than "Spool print documents so program finishes printing later".

Trying to print with the spooling enabled gives the error message "Cannot
print the file <filename>. Be sure that your printer is connected properly
and use Control Panel to verify that the printer is configured properly."
Trying to print a test page gives the message "Test page failed to print".

Before I had to repair the installation, the spool option was selected, and
printing worked perfectly well. Now, as you might guess, printing a
document causes the machine to more-or-less lock up until it has finished.

I'm using the latest XP drivers from the Kyocera site (v1.9.1025), and from
the Epson site, and checking in the services list shows the print spooler
service as running. I'm not entirely convinced it's a driver problem, as it
causes problems on both printers.

I'd be grateful for any advice on getting this working again.

Regards

Hi Jason,
If that is the only problem you are having, feel lucky. I've done several
Recoveries, to finally do a complete Restore, then all works well, since all
has to be reinstalled.
However, you may just need to remove, and uninstall the printers, and then
reinstall the drivers and connect your printers again. Before doing that,
try rolling back the drivers and see if that does it.
