what's going on in DOS?

I'm pretty new at this...I downloaded java sdk to learn
about programming and I can't get my machine to find the
compiler... Start>Run>Command Prompt gets me a DOS window
with the message : Specified search directory
bad...anybody know what's going on?

Could be 'cause there is no DOS in XP. It is NT based. It does have a DOS
emulator, with limited capabilities.
