Has anyone else come across this problem?
I have fitted a Netgear FA311 PCI 10/100 Ethernet card.
When booting, it read the card, installed the drivers and stated no
conflicts and was working properly.
The next time I went to boot up, the lights flashed from the hard drive to
the two CD roms (1 standard, 1CD-RW) and failed to boot.
I took out the network card, re inserted and the computer booted normally.
Now everytime I boot, it will not boot first time, and I have to switch off
and "Wiggle" or fiddle with the network card, and re boot, which then
starts up and the hardware device manager is still telling me everything is
OK.
Anyone had this problem? using Win XP SR1 on a ECS K7S5A motherboard (Athlon
XP 1700+)

Best regards
Alan

Did you disable your on-board Ethernet in the BIOS? You should do this
prior to installing a PCI-based Ethernet card.

No, I did not know you had to do that!
As the card is installed, do I need to uninstall then go into the bios?
Thanks

Nicholas,
I had a look in my bios setup and unless I am missing it, there is not an
option to enable or disable the on board Ethernet setting.
My board was not supplied with an on board Ethernet connection by the way.
There is options to disable Com 1 & Com2 however...

If you have to wiggle something you have a bad hardware connection.
Remove and reinstall the card and seat it all the way in.

I have done that countless times.
I have tried the card in three out of the five pci slots, all of which have
had something in them running ok.
Netgear reckons its a IRQ problem, but I have looked at both of my laptops
and both of them have the modems on the same IRQ as the network cards, so I
am unsure that is the problem.
they now are saying I should uninstall my modem and re install after the
network card, but that seems to be clutching at straws a bit :-)
I have now disabled COM 1 & COM 2 to see if that makes any difference.
this is the second Netgear card I have tried, both showing the same
symptoms. I have a 3com card arriving to see if the problem persists.

Ok, FINALLY!!!
On the fourth phone call to Netgear, I get someone who knows what the
problem is.
On the Netgear network card, there is a conflict between the on board chip
and AMD chips on the computer motherboard.
Solution?
new version of the FA311 card which removes the chip confliction. They are
sending out a replacement card.
If someone at Netgear had said this last week I could have saved some
time!!!!!!!
