I am having problems shutting down windows xp. The problem started with
windows 98 and did not go away when I converted to xp. When I shut down, my
computer does not shut off by itself. It goes to a screen that says windows
ready to shut down, you may turn off your computer. I then have to push the
on/off button on the computer to turn it off. When I try to turn it back on,
the switch does not work. I have to turn the surge protector off and then
back on, then the computer starts to boot up. Any ideas?

I've been having the same problem. You need to delete all hardware/software
drivers and replace with XP drivers. Does it shut down okay in Safe Mode?
If so, it's a software driver issue.
