How glad was i when i was playing medal of honor
yesterday and a darn pop-up...ummmm poped up in my face
during the game...entitled "messenger service"(top left
corner of this thing) and to add to the insult it was to
advertise an illegal way to get cable for free in US and
i live in Canada.....how sweet!!!! Anyone have anyhting
on that subject...i want to avoid this to happen ever
again. I must say though that i left my firewall down
when this happened...and i never do this. Thanks!!!

Greetings Luc,

What you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger
(which are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor
can Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

I have just followed similar instruction from a site stopmessengerspam.com
but it does give a warning as follows:

You can disable the messenger spam although doing so may result in Windows
not being able to alert you to some conditions. A list of circumstances when
Windows will use the Messenger service to pop up informative windows may
include things like print spooler, anti-virus, and event logger status
messages.

I trust from your comments Jonathan that I have nothing to worry about?
Many thanks.

Hi,

Yes, this is all hearsay. There is nothing in Windows XP that depends on this, the only real
exception to this is if it's being used in a corporate environment with some very very old
software running on the server side which would send notifications using the Messenger
Service to clients. However, in these types of situations, the corporate network would be
firewalled and internet access would be shared, therefore you wouldn't be seeing the
Messenger Service "advertisements" in the first place. So realistically, there is very
little reason not to turn it off.
