View Full Version : Voice and Video only One-Way
Steve Kemp

Hopefully someone has a cure for this....
The voice and video conversations between myself and "some" computers is
one-way. Specfically between myself and one WinXP computer I can have full
voice and video converations. Between myself and a 2nd WinXP computer I can
hear and see them, they can't me. This problem has not always been there. It
showed up sometime in that last month or so. I wish I knew exactly when so
that I could track it down to a specific change in the system.
First of all I am using Windows Messenger for Exchange 4.7 on our LAN. The
LAN is behind a router (obviously :-) ) All computers in question are
completely up-to-date as far as Service Packs and MS critical updates.
I have tried a complete uninstall of Windows Messenger on my computer (using
the 'RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove' command). Then reinstall. One
interesting thing in my system. I cannot "exit" Messenger. It always
complains about other applications "using features provided my Windows
Messenger".
Any ideas? I have tried the Knowledge Base to no avail.

Are both machines on your LAN or is one external to your network?

Yes, all are behind the LAN.

> Yes, all are behind the LAN.
Actually let me elaborate. I first noticed the problem with a computer that
was physically external to the LAN, howveer was connected by VPN, making it
vitually on the LAN. However, I was suspicious that the VPN was not the
problem. So then I tested on several computers that were physically on the
LAN (all WinXP with all updates) and found some that worked and some that
didn't. So I think I've eliminated the VPN as the problem.
I noticed another thread in the newsgroup has started regarding this
problem. Same symtoms, it used to work and now it doesn't. Perhaps a recent
update caused the problem?

I have the identical problem. Three XP machines on a lan
sharing a cable connection with a upnp router. Two of
the machines use messenger perfectly in all modes, both
to each other behind the lan and to computers outside of
it. One machine can receive voice and video but cannot
send it. It is a brand new, powerful machine with
nothing on it but Norton Antivirus, office and the XP
updates. It passes the audio tuning wizard and records
in sound recorder and when you talk to indicator goes up
and down showing that messenger is hearing the voice, it
is just not received at the other end.

Go on over to www.practicallynetworked.com and look at their 'Backgrounders'
or 'How To' section - somewhere down there is a link to setting up messaging
clients with various routers/firewalls. Here speaks a man who keeps meaning
to do this himself. :-)

It isn't a router/firewall issue as the problem is occuring on a LAN. The
messenger server is MS Exchange2000, also behind the LAN. Therefore no
traffic needs to cross the router. :-)

Oh my firewall and router are set up properly as two of

Richard: On your afflected computer, can you exit messenger?
When I attempt to shut down messenger on my affected machine it complains
that "There are other applications currently using features provided by
Windows Messenger... " This is also recently new behaviour. I don't know if
the two are connected... However they could be. The unaffected computer do
not have this problem.
What is really interesting is if I turn off the "Allow this program to run
in the background option" then I can exit messenger (i.e. it exits instead
of hiding the window when I click the X icon in the window).

My messenger acts the same as yours in both
circumstances. It gives me that error message even when
none of the referenced programs are running and I got
into the task manager and shut them down if they are
running in the background but it still won;t shut down as
you say. But if I do the setting you mentioned it then
immediately quits when you sign out.

My comments from another thread on this for what they are
worth:
I have three machines sharing a cable connection behind a
upnp. Two of the machines use Messenger perfectly--both
voice and video both behind and outside my network and
one of the machines has the exact same symptoms as you.
All three are running XP. Have been on the phone
Microsoft technical support for two hours and they
haven't solved it yet. And my problem is on a brand new
machine that has had nothing but Office and the xp
updates loaded onto it basically. So now they want to
have me set up a parallel directory and then add the
Windows updates back one by one to see which one breaks
messenger. Seems like alot of bull to me though,
especially when I get on this board and see a number of
people having identical problems. But the people I have
dealt with act like they have never heard of this problem
but lots of people on this board are complainging about
it so I don't know what is up with that. Seems like a
company with Microsoft's reources could put together some
test machines and duplicate and fix the problem without
me paying them 35 bucks to use me as a guinea pig when I
am really busy and don't have time for another three
hours with Microsoft technical support to pay them to
have me figure out the problem for them. What a
company. I just want the software to work without me
having to do anything but use it. Thats why they call
use End Users. I am an end user not a beta tester. Its
like selling a car and advertising its features but when
you get the car none of them work or you have to pay
extra to get them to fix what they sold you in the first
place.

Now that is really interesting.... Not that I know what it means. My STRONG
suspicion is that this is a recently introduced bug that only affects some
computers. I noticed that we snagged a MS Messenger developer a few postings
back. So now I guess we wait until they find a solution. Hopefully our
discussion has shed some light on it.
In the meantime I'll answer any questions about my configuration that they
have (HINT HINT). Resolving this is important to me because one of the
computers that I cannot "voice" communicate with is VPNing into our network.
Using Messenger is a lot cheaper than phoning Arizona from Ontario!

Well I am running the software on two different brand new
machines. They only difference between the one that
works and the one that doesn't is that the one that works
is an AMD with an Asus motherboard and the one that
doesn't work is an intel motherboard and processor. The
intel board is brand new and is running at 800 mhz bus
speed. The processor is using hyperthreading. The
machines have the same video card which are both geforce
5600. They both an running office and Norton antivirus.
I thought the problem was the sound card perhaps so I
disabled the onboard card and installed a soundblaster x
gamer but it did the same thing even with the mic plugged
into the xgamer card instead of the on board sound. So
its not the sound card that is the problem.

Hi Steve & John:
Not sure if any of this will help, but I'll stick my twopennies worth in ..
as far as not being able to exit messenger, if you have Norton Anti virus
2003 installed it has a new feature which scans text messages if you
disable this you should be able to exit messenger.. if you are running
internet device and discovery which shows up in my Network places and view
Netowrk connections as internet gateway .. double click go to properties go
to settings, and delete any of the messenger settings you see in there this
might cure the one that's not able to have voice and video.. not sure if
this helps but ..

Mine quit working when I updated the networking driver from Intel. Rolled it
back, and works fine again.
