On a newly installed xp system, I have darker bars going across the
screen adjacent to open windows or extending from text. I have tried
changing refresh rate and updating driver (nvidia ge force). Monitor
is Samsung 760V. Nothing so far has corrected this. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Make sure you don't have any speakers close to the monitor. Also make sure
the cable is plugged in securely.

Thanks for the suggestions--unfortunately, tried them and the problem
remains. Any other thoughts?

First thing I would do is try another monitor. Even if you have to borrow
one from a friend at least you can start eliminating things that way.
Another possibility is a poor connection between the AGP card and the
socket. Make sure the card lock at the back of the slot is not keeping the
card from seating all the way. Make sure the cable connection is secure as
well. Wiggle the cable and see if the display changes at all.
