Hi;
I recently switched from Earthlink to MSN, and like it
much better. However, the reason I left Earthlink has
followed me to MSN, so I know now that it is not MSN or
Earthlink that is causing the problem, and hope that
someone can point me in the right direction for a fix.
With Earthlink, and now MSN, I will go online, then,
sometimes as quickly as three minutes, I will simply stop
receiving anything. I don't get dropped, I'm still
connected, but everything just stops. If I try to access
a site, I'll get the 'Last Action Cancelled' error
message. This also applies to e-mail, downloading,
uploading and everything else. I do also get dropped
more frequently than I should, often right in the middle
of anything. But it is the just stopping that is really
irritating. It is not the same as 'freezing', my
computer doesn't freeze. It is only online.
I recently purchased Windows XP, but, because some of my
older programs will not run with XP, I set up a dual boot
system with Windows 98. Not only is this when this began
(with Earthlink, and now MSN), but I have it set up so
that I can go online with either OS, and this only
happens on XP. I have four different local numbers to
use, and this happens with all of them.
It has nothing to do with my phone line. My daughter has
the same as I have on her computer, along with the same
ISP local numbers and uses the same phone line, but it
never happens to her. She rarely gets dropped, either.
The only difference is that she does not have XP on her
computer, she still uses 98.
Some strange happenings...sometimes (not often) when I go
online, Messenger will report that it could not sign me
in, 'because it appears that I'm behind a firewall'. I
have no firewall. I have no virus protection running
either, just one I run occasionally to check my system.
Also, I download music with WinMX. When my connection
stops functioning, I will lose everyone whose queue I'm
in, but if I do nothing, any song I'm in the process of
downloading or uploading to someone else will continue.
This is baffling, since if I'm in the process of
downloading a file from, say, Windows Update or BigFix,
that will stop.
I'd love to do a clean install to start over, but I
can't. I have Win 98 full, but XP upgrade, I have to
install on top of 98. It is extremely frustrating when
you're trying to do something, especially in a secure
site like my bank and you have to start over, or you lose
all your queue positions in WinMX and go from 'next'
to '50' in line.
Hopefully, someone will have heard of this before, and
can offer some suggestions.
