Bad advice. Disabling the service does nothing to protect
the NetBIOS ports that are accessed by the Messenger
spammers and, potentially, people with ill intentions. The
OP should install and use a firewall, one of which is
included with XP, albeit a rather limited one, but it'll
stop the Messenger pop-ups.
