Just installed new Dell 8300 P4 and want to copy my Favorites folder to a
blank CD. However, every time I try to drag and drop the folder, I get
messages that certain files in the subfolders can't be copied because names
are too long or something about the file extensions, etc. When I click OK,
the Favorites folder appears on the CD but is missing many of the
subfolders. Never had this problem in my old computer with a Zip drive.
Does this mean I have to go through EVERY single folder in my Favorites list
and modify the names of each URL? Thanks.

Suggest in Internet Explorer Help, Index tab, you enter - exporting
favorites - for directions on how to export to a HTML file.

The file system on a CD cannot handle names as long as what the file system on
a hard drive or zip disk can - this includes the length of the path
(subdirectory levels) that the files are stored in.

You could do something like put the Favorites folder into a zip/rar/tar/gz/...
file (saving the path info), then write that file to the CD (if you use a zip
file, then XP can access it almost the same as if it were a regular folder).

Another possibility is to save your favorites using a program like the
freeware url2htm available at
http://ftp.pcworld.com/pub/new/internet/internet_tools/url2htmk.zip
(Or use the Export function under the File menu in IE itself)
This puts them all into one htm file (originally I think this was to move them
from IE to Netscape, which keeps its bookmarks all in one file).
You can then open the file in your browser, (or use it as your home page) to
get at it, or use the Import function to restore to your favorites folder.

If the files in question are just a little bit too long, you may be able to
drag what's inside the Favorites folder (instead of the folder itself) to the
CD - this will make the names shorter by the length of "Favorites\" - or you
may just have to rename a few subfolder names.

If your Favorites names are long enough to cause this problem, it probably
makes your favorites menu look like a mess - it may be a good idea to shorten
some of the names and tidy up, anyway. When you add a place to your
favorites, you get a chance to edit the name as you do this, and not save the
entire thing in the first place.
