View Full Version : XP bootup and Norton AV

New Dell 8300 was setup last week with McAfee AV preinstalled. I already
had Norton SystemWorks from last computer and wanted to use that instead.
First I uninstalled McAfee, and then attempted to install SystemWorks and
Roxio GoBack which were on the same installation CD. I later found out that
my earlier version of SW was not compatible with XP, and that XP had its own
restore program so I didn't need GoBack. The installation went badly and
when the computer rebooted, XP would not load. I tried Safe Mode from the
DOS screen that appeared, then read my manual, and tried to restore the
system from XP's program, but to no avail. All I got after that was the
blue error screen. Finally figured out to disable GoBack from the startup
screen and once that was done, I was able to boot back into the desktop. I
then uninstalled SW and GoBack and the next day installed a brand new stand
alone copy of Norton AV. Everything seems to work fine now except for one
thing. When the computer boots up, and the Norton AV icon first appears in
the system tray, it has a red X mark over it. After about 10 seconds and a
few programs close down in the background, the red X mark disappears and all
is fine.

Can someone tell me if this is normal, and if not, what I can do about it.
Thanks very much.

BTW, the version of GoBack is still the same even though the Norton
SystemWorks were two different versions. Even though XP has it's System
Restore feature, GoBack does a lot more and is worth having.

Agree with "ras" that GoBack should be retained; I had to use it and it
did the job! And it's great if needed after installing a new program.

Perhaps unrelated, but for your info, using WinXP home with NSW2003 I
also had Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.3. Uninstalled it and installed Roxio
6. Every bootup was safe mode. After several thousand hours isolated
that if NAV was set to start with windows, it booted into safe mode. If
removed the check so it didn't start with windows, all OK. So I
completely uninstalled Roxio and NSW, including searching the reg and
removing every tidbit. Then installed Roxio followed by NSW and all was
fine!!!

You don't say which version of NSW you had, but I believe 2001, 2 and 3
work with XP. To be certain, check the newsgroup
symantec.cuxtomerservice.general, and if you haven't already done so,
search this group for NAV. No comment on the red x through the taskbar
nav icon because I don't see it -- can't recall, but guess it is a
setting not to have it appear in the bar, even though NAV starts with
windows.
