Ctrl-F4 vanished in Windows XP

Hi all,

I have just installed Windows XP Home and several
application programs - and the Ctrl-F4 does not work in
any program. So if I have an application running with
several windows open (e.g. several MS Word documents), I
cannot close individual windows. Even the X button in the
upper right corner of the window is not available.
All I can do is close the complete application with Alt-F4.

Any idea how to change this back to the original key
setting?

Would be grateful for any help.

In MS Word it is usually just File>Close
