View Full Version : Please help. I just broke our companies email client! She's going to kick my ass!

Hi everyone,
I really hope that someone can help me with this! I was trying to backup
some of our company email to CD just to put away in an archive. It was only
the sent email so I found the .dbx file and copied it. Then I deleted it.
But here's the problem. My boss wanted the last months messages still to be
available in Outlook Express(5). So I copied the file back to the right
place but now i cant get OE to see the file. It just sits there all empty
when i start it up. Can someone please help me get OE to see the .dbx file
again. I figured that it would automatically see the file when i put it back
in place. I deleted the folder file in order to force OE to look at what
folders were present and it made a new folders file when it started up but i
still cant see the sent items.
I done this process after following two similar sets of instructions. Is it
perhaps different because I'm dealing with a default folder rather than a
user made folder like "My Responses" etc
I'd really be very grateful if anyone could offer me any advice on how to
get OE seeing the messages again
Many thanks in advance
Kind regards
Simon

Hi
Have you tried File>Import>Messages - and then browse to where you =
copied/saved the .DBX file?

Hi Will,
I did try that but it kept telling me that either the folder i told it too
look at was empty or that there were no.dbx files there. Which is silly. The
instructions I had suggested this route and said that it would even let me
specify wich dbx in particular to get. But i couldnt get to that part of the
wizard.
Thanks though. Can anyone help?

Copy the .DBX file back to your hard disk - not into the default =
location though. Then try Import... again.

Don't know if this will help, but....
You could change the ReadOnly file attribute.. (that is, uncheck in file
properties..)

Thanks guys,
Both of those things are things that I'll try when im back at work tonight.
Will, how come you think changing the location will work? The thing im
worried about there is, wont i have sent messages being saved in a different
location from the rest of the emails. Or is this different location only for
the purposes of importing the messages?
Thanks gain both of you

Right, the different location is only for the importing of the messages.
They will be imported back into the correct location, after which you can
delete the dbx file that you imported from.

Hi Simon
I've just checked - copied my sent.dbx to another folder, deleted my =
sent.dbx file, while OE was closed. Opened OE and then checked in store =
folder - a new sent.dbx file had been created. Closed OE and then =
copied back my original sent.dbx file to the store folder. Opened OE =
again and my original sent files were back. When you copied the =
sent.dbx file back to it's original location was OE running?
