View Full Version : XP on two computers

I own a full version of XP Home. Today I was told by a
vendor that microsoft would allow me to load my XP on a
laptop/notebook which I own in addition to the main
desktop which I bought the XP for. This seemed to me to
be not true but he said that he found it somewhere in
microsofts policy statements. I would like to do this and
can see some reasoning behind allowing a laptop/notebook,
which is portable for away trips, to have the same
operating system as the prime desktop. Any thoughts or
information on this?

Al,
Yes - it is not true.
If you want to install Windows XP on your laptop you must purchase another
copy/license.

That's incorrect. You need one licence per machine for the OS. Your informant is
probably getting confused with Office XP which does allow loading of a second
copy to the owner's laptop (for full licence versions only).

As with *all* Microsoft operating systems, it's necessary (to be
in compliance with both the EULA and copyright laws, if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which
it is installed. Further, WinXP differs from earlier versions of
Windows in that Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and
anti-theft mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make
more difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking
about.

If I wipe my hard drive clean, will I be able to re-install XP on the same
computer?

Greetings --
Certainly. There's no limitation to the number of times you can
re-install the same license on the same PC.
