I too experienced errors similar to Greig's after
updating from Windows Messenger 4.7.0105 to 4.7.2009.
I clicked on the Update link and immediately was unable
to login to Messenger. I tried changing my password and I
deleted and re-registered my .NET passport account.
Neither of these worked.
When I got the email asking me to verify my email
for .NET passport, I clicked on the link, and clicked on
the "continue" button, but received a blank screen when
the next page would never load completely.
I was finally able to verify my email from my 'home'
computer.
I reviewed Jonathan's message and tried suggestions
#1,2,3,6,7,8. I am using XP's firewall, but I turned it
off and tried again, No luck.
Other people on our network who have "updated" have had
similar problems. We are on a LAN, using Exchange 2000,
Outlook 2002 (10.4608,4219) SP2. We don't use MSN or
Hotmail.
Could there be something in our network setup that is
causing the new updates to not connect to the internet?
I did a System Restore and 'reverted' back to using
4.7.0105. Now I can login, but I'm still getting an error
message, "Signing in to Communications Service failed
because the service is temporarily unavailable. Please
try again later."
Please review and give more suggestions before more users
on our network click on Update. Note: Users who have not
updated are not having similar problems.
