View Full Version : NetBEUI for XP

I need to install NetBEUI on XP Prof.
Since the OS came preloaded, I do not have the CD.
I need 2 files called Nbf.sys and Netnbf.inf
Any idea where I can get them?

XP prefers IPX/SPX which is already loaded,
in place of NetBEUI which is no longer supported.
Try it !

The default and optimum protocol is actually TCP/IP and not IPX.
IPX/SPX only exists for backward compatibility to old Novell Netware
systems.
Even Novell is moving to TCP/IP.
NetBUEI and IPX/SPX are legacy protocols.

You are also mistaken about NetBEUI not being supported - IT IS fully
supported, that is why we still supply it on the Retail CD in the
VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI folder.

Try running a Local Network without IPX/SPX or NETBEUI,
Your computers will not talk to each other.

I run my home (local) network using TCP/IP as does every single one of my
clients and all of the customers I have to deal with.
As I said - we fully support NetBEUI - but it is legacy networking
technology; and IPX/SPX is really only for Netware interoperability.
The real world uses TCP/IP everywhere - at home and at work.
I think you should do some more reading on the subject of networking and
move to a more modern protocol.

Squire;

I am running my network (router and 4 to 8 computers) using TCP/IP, and
have no issues. Perhaps you've been napping? We are in the 21st century
now.

OK, you guys,

One of my computers is an Intel 700 MHz, and another is an Intel 300MHz.
I have tried to go strictly with TCP/IP by itself and although the computers
see each other
they do not communicate.
I am using Ethernet cards thru an Etherfast Link system, linked to a Cable
Modem.
The only way my computers are able to talk to each other is using the
IPX/SPX protocol.
Got any Ideas what I am doing wrong?

Greetings --

That's funny, I'm using only TCP/IP here, and everything's fine.
And I seriously doubt that I'm the only one who has no need for
multiple protocols.

Greetings --

It's hard to say, given that you've provided no specifics of your
configuration. So I'll list some obvious possible causes:

1) You haven't disabled WinXP's built-in firewall for the internal
LAN connections.

2) You're using static IP addresses and they're not in the same
subnet.

3) You're using DHCP, but the DHCP capabilities of the "Etherfast
Link" router aren't enabled, aren't configured properly, or don't
exist at all. I'm not familiar with the specific device's
capabilities, so this is a wild guess.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless --
almost entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful,
easy-to-follow information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Mike,

I hate to disagree with you, but the following KB article specifically
states that support for NetBEUI has been discontinued, and that the
necessary files are only provided for backward compatibility.

Thanks for your reply, Bruce,

I used the Network Wizard to set up my local network, so I assumed
everything was OK.
I will follow up on your tips to see what else is lacking.

Thanks,

Most likely what you guys who are running TCP/IP only are doing is
enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP so that they can talk to each other.
This is the default setting so you don't have to do anything to make
this happen. If you're doing that, you'd better have real good
protection, like a good firewall. It is more secure to disable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP and run an alternate protocol that isn't bound to
TCP/IP for file/print sharing.

What could possibly go wrong?

Mike Brannigan [MSFT]
December 27th 03, 12:09 AM
Sorry Doug - Yes I understand the terminology - it was that
"Squire's"inference was that it is not supported . And while it may be
semantic - we do support the use of NetBEUI - it is just that it is no
longer considered a technology with any long term value and as such is
provided for predominantly backward compatibility. The inference from
Squire was that you may not use NetBEUI as it is not supported (kind of
implying - not installable).

Either way - you, I and all the other posts point out the primary fact that
TCP/IP is the way to go and everything else is either interoperability or
legacy at best, as regards other protocols
