View Full Version : XP vs XP Home

I am seeking advice/opinions concerning which XP version to install on which
of my two PCs.

I have a Pentium II (400mhz) desktop with two HDDs totaling 30 gig, CDRW,
etc. used primarily for digital photo editing, CD ripping and financial
work. I have a Pentium II (366mhz) laptop with 6 gig HDD, CD-R and little
else used for internet surfing, Palm syncing and light word processing.

I have a copy of XP pro and XP home and am trying to decide which of these
to put on which PC. I originally thought that the pro version (being larger)
would naturally go on the desktop, but I read somewhere that pro is better
than home on laptops.

Does anyone have an informed opinion on which OS should go where? All input
is welcome.

Thanks

See the features of each version here, and decide for yourself which would
be best on which machine.

John;
Windows XP Home and Pro are virtually identical in performance and
stability.
The differed between the two are mostly ability to join a domain and
more security:

I would install Pro non the Desktop simply because it is bigger and
faster, however even that is not really an important qualifier.

Are either of the Windows XP OEM?
OEM is normally permanently tied to the first computer installed and
can not be transferred to another computer regardless the condition of
the first computer.
If one is OEM, that may be a deciding factor.

Greetings --

You haven't mentioned how much RAM each PC has, which would be a
critical factor. To be perfectly honest, with CPUs as slow as both
PCs have, I wouldn't want to use any version of WinXP on either one of
them, particularly if you're planning on doing anything that's
graphics-intensive, like photo editing. Of course, performance that I
find glacial might be perfectly acceptable to you; it's your choice.

As the two versions of WinXP are identical, when it comes to
stability, functionality, and device driver and software application
compatibility, it makes no real difference which one goes where.

The desktop has 512 meg and the laptop has 128 meg. The XP pro is OEM, but
not yet registered. I know both of these PCs have older processors, but both
were running Windows ME and the XP change operates much better, faster, more
stable(er) on both boxes. Thanks again for the replys.

John;
Per my last post.
Since Windows XP Pro is OEM, once it is installed and activated on a
computer, it can NEVER be transferred to another computer.
When the computer finally dies (2 hours, 2 days, 2 decades, is of no
consequence) Windows XP OEM dies.
So be sure to plan accordingly.
