View Full Version : Messenger and firewall

Hi, having a problem with messenger getting through the windowsXP firewall.
Was working fine, then I installed MSN messenger 5.0 and the built in
firewall started blocking everything to/from messenger. Uninstalled MSN 5.0
and still have the problem. If I turn off the firewall, everything works
fine. Not sure which way to go. Reinstalled MSN messenger 5.0 and still
can't get through. Did a repair install and didn't help.
Any suggestions?
Jonathan?

Greetings Gus,
When you say "get through", do you mean just logging in, or features like voice/video?
Regardless, try the following -- click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications,
Network Connections. Right click the internet connection, then click Properties. Click the
Advanced Tab, verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is on, and then click the Settings
button. Check to see if there are 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entries. If so, click each 'msmsgs'
or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click
the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger and try again.

Suggestion didn't help, Jonathan. I removed all the messenger stuff from the
firewall settings and it will still on connect for text chat. I think, a
while ago, you gave me a regsvr command for it, but that waws a long time
ago. With the firewall (built in) turned off, everything works fine, but
with it on, only text chat. Any more suggestions?
thanks,
Gus
