office 97 error with XP

I am new to XP and have been trying to figure out this
problem for a long time but I cant. The problem is when I
start my word 97 or excel 97 I always get a error that
says '<filename> is being used by <username> Do you want
to make a copy? <OK> or <Cancel>' Does anybody know how
to fix this? There are no other people connected on my
computer, infact its a stand alone computer with ethernet
and modem but no other computers. Please help. Thank you,

install all
the available updates for Office 97.
