View Full Version : Two competing versions of Messenger
bill

Hello,
I used to use Version 4.7 of Messenger. Then I got a
message saying update to Version 5.0 so I did. Now I
have both versions in my System Tray.
I can't seem to get rid of the old one - if I uninstall
from control panel, it gets rid of the latest version
5.0. Then I get bugged to update again...and the whole
thing starts again...
Can anyone help me ?
Thanks
Bill.

Greetings Bill,
You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7 (the old one), but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that utilize
Messenger from working (or loading without problems). You can just disable Windows Messenger
4.7, by opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program
when Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though.
As well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger 5 to work
properly. If you have any problems with this, reply back with the "exact" error.
Also see:

Messenger 5.0.

Jonathan,
I did as you said, but I still get both icons in the
system tray when I switch on. This implies it's still
loading up v4.7 I suppose.

Hi Bill,
It is, it's possible that something else is loading it -- do you have Norton Antivirus 2003
installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003,
which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus
(Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the
clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck
MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Jonathan,
No I don't have Norton - I have PCcillin2002 virus
software. I looked at the settings page for this, but it
doesn't seem to have a messenger related option.

Hi Bill,
No, Norton Antivirus 2003 is the only one that can cause this. You might want to check if
it's still in the startup (it may have been added by something else), simply run msconfig
(click Start, then Run, enter "msconfig" and click OK), then
click the Startup tab, uncheck the 'msmsgs' entry (if it's there) and click OK.
As well, the only other applications I can think of that will start Windows Messenger are
Outlook and Outlook Express. To stop these, for Outlook (XP/2002), just open Outlook, click
the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other tab, and uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in
Microsoft Outlook'. For Outlook Express, close Outlook Express, and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
You'll need to start Outlook Express to see the change.
