What's the difference between "Start Webcam for MSN
Messenger" and "Start Camera" ? Anybody ?

Greetings,
The "Start Camera" option is the built-in video support in Windows XP (and available only on
Windows XP-running Messenger clients). The "Start Webcam for MSN Messenger" is a separate
addition from Logitech for MSN Messenger 5, which works on all Windows versions.

Hi,
The Webcam function is an add-on created by Logitech and actually loads up their program to
use it. If you want more technical info, I can give it to you (not 100% sure what you're
trying to find out).

Sorry for sounding vague. I was meaning how do the "Start
Camera" and "Start Webcam" functions differ ? Are they for
the same purpose : teleconferencing ?

Hi,
No problem (just thought I should clarify before writing a novel you don't want). The Start
Webcam option is basically for just seeing your contact (there's no audio), whereas the Start
Camera ("Start Video Conference" in MSN Messenger 6) option is primarily for
videoconferencing, and includes audio.

Thanks for your replies. I'm basically familiar with MSN
Messenger now but there's one problem left. During
videoconferencing the other side can't hear me although
I'm pretty sure that my mic is working fine.

Hi,
It sounds like something on your contacts' side might be blocking your audio communication.
You might want to ask them to try turning off the built-in Windows XP Internet Connection
Firewall. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in category view
click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right click the
network/internet connection, then click Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that
the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked. If your contact is using some other
third-party firewall, have them make sure that Messenger is set to 'Permit All', 'Allow All'
or 'Medium' (ZoneAlarm).
Also, if your contact is using an UPnP-enabled router, they might need to reset their UPnP
port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network
Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should be under the Internet Gateway
heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button, click each 'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr'
entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger (right-click the Messenger
icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Nope, I think the problem is on my end and probably has to
do with the program. I tried voice conferencing with Yahoo
Messenger and it worked.

Hi,
You really can't compare Yahoo Messenger and Windows Messenger 4.x/5.x or MSN Messenger
4.x/5.x (although MSN Messenger 6 is more comparable), simply because Yahoo has several ways
to connect you to your contact, and doesn't utilize Universal Plug and Play (UPnP).
Another thing you might want to try is turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click
Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again.

Turning off your firewall because Messenger audio won't work is like leaving
your front door unlocked because the doorbell won't work. It's a dangerous
work-around, and should certainly not be recommended without a warning.
If Messenger isn't compatible with XP's own firewall, then it's simply
broken and we should use other software instead.

Hi Gary,
The Internet Connection Firewall does work with Messenger, but in some cases, it doesn't (due
to some UPnP issues).
It's much easier to address the problem with the ICF off.

What cases are these? Is there a less dangerous way to address the problem
than by disabling the XP firewall?
I use MSN Messenger 6.0 with XP Pro (all updates installed), UPnP service
running, XP firewall enabled (default settings), cable internet connection
(Comcast). I'm not behind any other firewall or router. I'm trying to
connect to a user who has MSN Messenger 6.0 with XP Home (all updates
installed), UPnP service running, XP firewall enabled (default settings),
cable internet connection (Optonline), no other firewall or router. We can
exchange instant messages and video, but cannot make an audio connection.
> It's much easier to address the problem with the ICF off.
Perhaps it's easy, but it's not safe. You're providing step-by-step
instructions to novices for disabling their XP firewalls without even
telling them what a firewall is or what the consequences are of disabling
it. It's a bit like teaching four-year-olds how to open child-proof
containers. If I were a cracker trying to gain access to XP systems, one of
the first things I'd try to do is to socially-engineer a way to induce many
novices to inactivate their firewalls.
