I removed MSN messenger 5.0, now messenger 4.7 only works with text chat,
remote ass't, and file transfer, nothing else, but if I turn off the
firewall, everything works (built in firewall). deleted all messenger ports
in the firewall and still nothing. No matter whether I initiate the request
or it comes via someone else, messenger does nothing. I suspect its not
getting through the firewall. Last time this happened, you gave me a file to
either rundll to or regsvr with, can't remember which. Any suggestions?

Greetings Gus,
If you go back into the port forwarding in the firewall, do the 'msmsgs' entries reappear
after you've rebooted? If not, what's happening is Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) in the
firewall and in Messenger aren't communicating (therefore the ports aren't being opened
automatically). If they are there then something else is blocking it.
If the 'msmsgs' entries aren't coming back, then reinstalling your network card may cause it
to start working again. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications,
Network Connections, right-click your network connection and choose Disable. If you're using
Dialup, right-click and choose Disconnect.
Next, click Start, right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab,
and then click the Device Manager button. Click the '+' next to Network adapters, then
right-click your network card, and choose Uninstall. If you're using a modem, do the same
next to the 'Modems'.
Then, after confirming to uninstall, click the Action menu, and choose Scan for hardware
changes. Your network adapter or modem should now be reinstalled.
Reboot, and then see if the problem is fixed.
Also note that file transfer isn't possible unless you manually open the ports in the
firewall for file transfer. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're
in category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections.
Right click your connection, then click Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your
connection will usually be called Local Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of
your Internet Service Provider. Click the Advanced Tab, then click the Settings tab. Click
the add button and then in the Service Settings, type in the following information. For
Description enter MSN Connection for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for both External
and Internal ports enter 6891. Verify TCP is selected and click OK. Now you need to repeat
the last step but changing the ports to 6892, 6893, 6894, 6895, 6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900.
Yes, 10 (including the first one) will now be selected.
I don't know of any registry changes or rundll commands that would fix this however.
