I have a machine running XP pro.

I have fitted an Adaptec 2940 and a DDS2 tape drive. Similar in many
ways to the W98, W2K and Unix systems I have.

Now this particular drive was taken out of a W98 box where it had
behaved itself and done all that was asked of it.

In the XP box I am unable to get a simple backup.

backup to a "new" tape fails to mount media, even though the "new tapes"
had been declared unrecognisable and "prepared".

Command line attempts at backing up simple get an "invalid tape name"
messages in the log.

Is there anyway of telling XP to simply use the tape that's in the drive
and not prat around?

Locate and click the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

On the Edit menu, click Permissions .

Click the registry key for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that
Read

and Full Control are both set to Allow .

Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user that is currently logged on is
selected,

that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and
Subkeys

is listed in the Apply to column.

Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries

shown here that apply to child objects check box.

Click Apply , and then click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue.

Click OK , and then click OK again
