I added 512MB of Crucial PC2700 DDR Ram to my Dell 4550. Before I had 512MB
from Dell, now it correctly shows 1GB of RAM.

After rebooting I lost 500MB or so of hard drive space. I track this using
Norton Systemworks disk space sensor, which showed about 48.1xxGB before
adding the RAM and 47.6xxGB after. That was immediately before and after the
RAM insertion so there was absolutely nothing else done or loaded. Not
really a problem but odd. Any ideas anyone?

Two reasons;

1. Windows swap file (called pagefile.sys) is set to utomatic on your
system and it increased when you increased your ram

2. If you have hibernation enabled, then it will create a file equal to the
size of your RAM that is used for a system state snapshot when your computer
goes into hibernation.

Rich:
Windows is managing your virtual memory and it probably sees that you have
500mb more of ram so it allocated more of your hard drive to virtual memory.
You haven't lost any hard drive space, but it's now allocated to virtual
memory. You can disable the system management of it and designate actual
amounts yourself if you go to CONTROL
PANEL/SYSTEM/ADVANCED/PERFORMANCE/SETTINGS/ADVANCED.
