Could you please tell me how to STOP windows messenger
from automatically starting up when I log onto the
internet. I have version 4.7 for windows XP. in the
tools, options, preferences, general everything is
unchecked - run this programme when windows starts, allow
the programme to run in the background. The only checked
one is show me as away after 5 minutes. I have
uninstalled and reinstalled it numerous times but it
keeps happening - I want to be the one to control when I
turn on Messenger!
Also the internet connection - I have checked idle time
before hanging up at 4 hours, so why does it disconnect
me every twenty or so minutes. It is very frustrating.
I really hope someone can help. I feel the computer is
controlling me not the other way around

go into your windows messenger settings. and untick run with windows
and untick allow running in background and then re-boot and see that
helps you.

Oops, sorry, right, do you have installed any startup managers or boot
managers, ones which you can change what programs will load-up with
windows?? is you have, use them to delete the messenger entry to startup
with windows. or, search on any search engine, for boot-up managers, or
startup managers, and download and install and run.

If not then, go into start menu, run, type in msinfo32, select the
startup taband find messenger startup entry and un-tick this. Then re-
boot.

my answer should fix it.

ummmmm...possibly your internet explorer settings need to be changed,
specificly you dial-up/DUN settings, i think it is set to disconnect
after 20 minutes of idle use.

Greetings Gail,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior
(automatically starting). To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and
click OK.

As for the Internet disconnecting, you might want to contact your ISP (Internet Service
Provider) and see what they say about your "disconnecting every 20 minutes" problem (perhaps
it's a problem on their end, some sort of idle setting they have, etc.).

I just wanted to thank you so much for your help. You
were right, I have only installed Norton Antivirus 2003 a
couple of weeks ago. I did what you said and everything
is working perfectly. Thank you
