Does anyone know why the system downloads an update to
messenger (connectivity, it says) every time I log on even
though it has been downloaded previously and installed?
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

That "update" was for Windows Messenger 4.6. You might just try installing the latest
version of Windows Messenger (4.7.2009) to fix this:
