View Full Version : SMC Router

I have an SMC Barricade SMC7004ABR broadband router and I
cannot send files using Windows Messenger. A friend who
has a Linksys router simply uses his "DMZ Hosting", but
unfortunately, that does not solve my issue. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.

Greetings Anthony,

What version of the 7004ABR do you have (look at the bottom). If it's 750.5702 or 750.5756,
you can upgrade to firmware release 1.42.003 (or higher) which has support for Universal Plug
and Play (UPnP), which MSN Messenger 5 (and the upcoming MSN Messenger 6 and Windows
Messenger 5) can use to send files.

You can find the firmware update here (latest is 1.42.012):
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=67&site=c#downloads

After installing the firmware update, go through the router configuration (see documentation
on how to do this), and you'll probably see a UPnP toggle, make sure it's on, then reboot and
install MSN Messenger 5:
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=1.
After this you should be able to send files and use the other features of Messenger
(voice/video etc.)

Please note, if you're using one of the other model numbers of the 7004ABR (750.5432 or
750.5648), there is no update to upgrade these routers to UPnP or add any special Messenger
support (like your friends' Linksys). However, if you do find yourself in this situation,
the upcoming versions of MSN Messenger 6 and Windows Messenger 5 may be able to help you send
files (by using some other file transfer methods not in place in current Messenger versions).

Hello. I would first like to thank you for responding to
my problem. Unfortunately, I have 750.5432 model, which
does not have the new firmware. I guess I will just have
to wait for upcoming versions of Messenger.

Thanks,
Anthony

Try version 6. It should work in most cases even without UPnP (albeit
slower).

Does MSNIM 6.0 use an intermediate server if it can't make a direct/UPnP
connection?

For file transfer and webcam, yes. Not for audio.
