Greetings --
Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"
This a type of spam has become quite common over the past few
months, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you may well be open to other threats. Install and use a decent,
properly configured firewall. (Disabling the messenger service, as
some people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does nothing to
secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with" these
messages and the problem they represent is particularly foolish.

I got so fed up with those messages, that I went to
windows.com to find out exactly how to get rid of it.
Basically what you do is go to your control panel, then go
to administrative tools, then go to "services" (keep in
mind that you will only be able to see administrative
tools in the classic view of control panel). Once you have
the services open, go to the one that says messenger, and
make sure u change it to a manual startup and stop it from
running also. This should get rid of your problem.
Enjoy

No, that procedure doesn't get rid of the problem, which is a PC
that's wide open to the Internet. Your method, which does nothing but
hide the symptom, is a very inadequate, "head in the sand" approach to
computer security. A properly configured firewall is necessary.

Wrong! Use a firewall, one better than that which comes with the O/S.
