I am getting invitations to chat from people who say they see I am online
even though...
I do not have Windows Instant Messenger loaded (and I am not logged on as,
as far as I know).
I am running Windows XP.
When this happens I am running Outlook 2002 (and I have a Hotmail account in
Outlook).
En able Instant Messenger in Outlook is NOT checked.
It has not happened with Outlook Express. (Log on to Instant Messenger is
NOT checked).
I have a DSL connection with a static IP address.
I have a passport to log into Hotmail.
I have tried uninstalling Windows Messenger, MSN Explorer, and .net and
people still see that I am online and send chat invitations.
The people who send chat invitation are in my address book and have
Hotmail/MSN accounts.
So far, no problem. But I am concerned that even when I have Windows
Messenger turned off, it does not appear to go away.
Any ideas what is happening?
Thanks.

Greetings,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
