Messenger shuts down my cable connection

Whenever I connect MSN Messenger my cable connection just stops. I
tried every version of messenger (up to version 6)... The only way I
can bring it on again is by turning off and on the modem... Not even
rebooting the computer works...

I have Win XP Professional and this problem started 2 months ago. I
thought it might have something related to me installing VMWare but I
already uninstalled it and the problem persists... I also have Yahoo
Messenger and it works fine...

Does anyone know what's the problem??
