Is there any benefit in having both MSN messenger and
Windows messenger installed on the same XP machine ?

Hi,
MSN Messenger uses some of the features that require Windows Messenger to be
installed on the machine.
Uninstalling Windows Messenger can disable some of the messenger features
such as Whiteboard Sharing, and others on MSN Messenger.

Take a look at Doug Knox's Website at this link for detailed instructions on
how to disable your Windows Messenger.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger.htm

When you do this your Windows Messenger won't show up in your taskbar
anymore and will not start up if you try clicking the Windows Messenger
shortcut in your start menu.

However if you want to completely remove/uninstall Windows Messenger from
Windows XP can be found at this website made by Jonathan Kay.

I've just downloaded and installed MSN Messenger 5.0 (I already had Windows
Messenger 4.7) on XP Pro.

When the installation finished MSN Messenger started and logged me IN.
Almost immediatly Windows Messenger logged me OUT with a message telling me
that this was because I was logged in somewhere else (eg via MSN Messenger).
Both icons remained on my task bar.

After rebooting I only got the MSN messenger on my tast bar and everything
seems to work.. so it looks like a seemless conversion just happened. eg No
need to do anything specific about disabling Windows Messenger as it happens
automatically.

....unless I missed something.

Greetings Freddie,

Well, to utilize the Remote Assistance, Whiteboard and Application Sharing features in MSN
Messenger, Windows Messenger must still be installed (but doesn't need to be running).
However, there are some advantages to using both, mainly if you have two Passport accounts,
you can be signed into both Passports at the same time -- one in MSN Messenger and one in
Windows Messenger.
