Fresh install of Window XP pro+SP1+all the critical update on a new
machine. The problem is that a lot of the setting don't seem to stick;
for instance, I setup my emails accounts in outlook express and every so
often the setting change from "pop.mail.yahoo.com" to "local host"
withouth any input from my part. Of course, I can't then retreive my
mail untill I manually change back the settings.
Then, when the computer is not used for a little while, I set it up to
close the screen (no hibernate, sleep or hard disc shutdown, just the
screen); when I move the mouse the screen wakes up, but all the running
program on the system tray (anti-virus, firewall, ATI utility etc...)
are shut down.
No matter how I close internet explorer, it always open in the "restore"
state but takes the whole screen, which is a pain because I have a big
screen at high resolution and I like to have a few windows open at the
same time but the internet explorer window is very hard to manipulate in
that state. In any case, coming from W2K, the windows always used to
open in the state they were last closed...
I could go on and on but you get the picture. Is it "fixeable"?
Is my system hunted, or is that what Microsoft calls an "upgrade"?
