updated briefcase/deleted files

I didn't know about, or the purpose of briefcase until
I "updated " some files I had stored there it said needed
to be updated. Poof, I watched it say delete, delete,
delete. No warning screen, no explanation to be found.
Pitures of my kids birthday. Im sick. I used directory
snoop to look for anything resembling them to no avail
yet. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
