Greetings,
If you just want to use MSN Messenger 5, you can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by
opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when
Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As
well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger to work properly.

I've not got both installed on my XP machine. I seem to
be able to switch easily between the two. However,
Windows Messenger does not log in automatically when I
boot-up, it used to ?!
The log in check is there in Tools/Options so I'm puzzled.
Any thoughts, on had to get auto log-in back ?
Thanks ALL

Hi Freddie,
You can quickly get it back by reinstalling Windows Messenger. To do so, first, close down
Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and click
close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7
Reboot, click "Yes" to remove your preferences, then reinstall from
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=0

Jonathan,
Thanks for the assistance so far.
I followed your instructions to uninstall and then re-
install Windows Messenger to get it to automatically log-
in when I start windows as this function had been
disabled when I installed MSN messenger 6.0. However,
the "auto log-in" still does not work and even the
Windows Messeneger ICON now does not appear in the system
tray when I re-start windows. I now have to run messenger
from the Programs listing in Start-Programs, etc.
I have ensured that "run this programme when windows
starts.." option is checked in windows messenger options.
Just to be clear I would like to have both MSN and
Windows messenger installed on my XP home PC. With
Windows messenger running & siging-in automatically each
time I start windows. I would then select to use MSN
manually when required.
Hope you can help.

Hi Freddie,
As a simply workaround, I'd just add Windows Messenger to the Startup group. To do so, click
the Start Menu, point to All Programs, right-click and Startup group and choose Open. Then
choose the File menu, then New, and then Shortcut. In the location field, enter:
"%programfiles%\messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
(exactly as shown above) then click Next, and then Finish.
It should then work as you describe.
