Hi!

My problem is the following: I disabled the automatic
startup on windows messenger. I also disabled the option
that allowed it to run in the background. However, every
time I boot up my system, the messenger service starts
along with it, but without even opening the program. To
illustrate the situation better, imagine that you start
windows, and that it is loading the system tray icons
like norton antivirus autoprotect and that kind of stuff.
Then out of nowhere the little squares informing you of
unread mail pop up, and people start sending messages to
you, whose corresponding windows appear on the taskbar,
but the messenger icon with the blue and white dudes is
nowhere to be seen!!

I got into msconfig and disabled the following options at
the services tab:

ASP.NET State Service
Messenger
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Net Logon
Secondary Logon

and obviously this hasn't worked, since the problem still
appears.

Do any of you guys know how to fix this issue? Should I
restore the startup services that I disabled?

Some info that might be useful:

I installed the microsoft .net framework even though I
don't think I need it but anyways...

Im on cable, so the net starts autamatically with Windows

My messenger version is the following: 4.7.0041

Thanks beforehand for your help!

Greetings Eduardo,

I noticed you mentioned Norton Antivirus -- Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
