I got rid of Messenger more than a year ago, just after I
installed XP, but I still was getting so many pop-ups they
were driving me crazy. I didn't know they are supposedly
associated with Messenger? I think you get them whether
or not you have Messenger. The pop-ups are just another
form of spam, IMO.
Anyhow, you can get rid of them though the solution isn't
absolutely perfect. I've installed a program called RedV
PopUp Protector. It worked very well at first and it
still does, but when a pop-up tries to get through, it
delays navigation around Internet because everything
briefly freezes while the pop-up is being squelched. And
now I'm having some IE problems that I suspect might be
related to the anti pop-up program. Looks like there are
no perfect solutions.
Until people stop buying from firms that use pop-ups and
other forms of spam, they're not going to go away. I hate
the idea of over-regulation, but they are a violation of
my privacy. They appear uninvited on MY computer that I
pay for, accessed through my ISP who I am paying and they
are no better than phone solicitors. But as long as they
make money by invading our privacy, they aren't going to
get religion.
If anyone knows about an anti-pop-up program that works
better than RedV I'd like to know about it ~ there must be
a good strong program that can call them to a halt?
