Hi all,

Don't know if this is the right group, but give it a try.

Problem: some weeks ago something must have happened to my Windows XP
so that the "documents and settings\all users\" folder got the "write
protected" flag.

The result is that certain setup procedures are failing at the point
where the icons should be placed into the Start Menu.

I have a particular application which needs to be installed urgently,
but it is impossible because of that. I need this to get my work done.

I tried everything ever possible, but it is not possible to remove
the write protected flag. It's immediately back after opening the
properties again.

Changing the owner, permissions, ... - no way! Going crazy instead.

I would love the one who can help me out of this situation.

I have read a forum article about exactly the same problem, but their
suggestion was a fresh install of Windows XP.

Please help!!!

Sincerely,
Caroline

start in safe mode, log in as administrator.

right click/properties on a folder, a security tab will be available

permissions etc can be configured there

I doubt that this will be successful, but I'll give it a try
tomorrow and let you know.

The security tab is always available (being logged on as admin), where
is the difference to the safe mode?

Why should it accept the change in safe mode, but not in
regular mode?

It looks like one of those "better use format c:" problems.

Sincerely,
Caroline

aplologies for the misunderstanding, i assumed you were talking about XP
Home.

one other possibility is simple file sharing, maybe try disabling it.(in
folder options/view)
