XP Pro - hard drive constantly churning

I seem to be having a problem with my PC. Running Windows XP and these days
the hard drive seems to be churning more or less all the time. It's slowing
the PC down quite a lot and is generally a nuisance.

Plenty of room on the hard drive. 60Gb drive, just over half full.

256Mb RAM and I don't seem to be running short.

Task manager doesn't suggest there's any rogue processes eating up lots of
CPU time.

CPU is Athlon XP 1800+ - easily up to the job.

What could be going on?

It could be a background defrag.

It may be the Indexing Service thats in windows if you
don't use it you can turn it off. Press F1 and type indexing
for info on it.
