View Full Version : MSN Voice Chat behind router firewall

Hi,

I'm wondering if you could give me some advice. I have
just purchased a Dlink DSL-504 router with 4 port switch
built in and am wanting to know if I can use MSN Messenger
5.0 on Windows 98 and Windows Messenger on XP to voice
chat with people? I know there has been advice saying
that the router needs to be UPnP capable in order to use
voice chat, but is there a way to enable voice chat while
being behind a hardware firewall. My router doesn't
support UPnP.

I can pinhole some ports but am unsure what ones need to
be used for this. I have heard the ports are 6891 - 6900
to enable file send; 6901 to enable voice communication.
You also have to trigger ports 1863 and 5190. Is this
true.

I don't want to have to purchase another router because of
this.

Cheers,
Brendan.

Greetings Brendan,

Unfortunately without UPnP support, you won't be able to use voice support through your
router using MSN Messenger 5. You can open and forward every port, it simply won't work
(unless D-Link has added some type of built-in Messenger support). As well, for
clarification, port 6901 for voice hasn't been used since version 3 (since we're at version 6
now, this is VERY outdated information).

Regardless, you might try using MSN Messenger 6 (on both XP and Windows 98) to get around
this problem (your contacts will also need to use it, although you'll probably find a number
of them are):

Thanks Inferno,

I phoned DLink Australia yesterday and they informed me
that with the new firmware version the router does support
UPnP (and yes, the firmware does work in NZ). So all I
need to do now is configure it properly.

Cheers,
Brendan.

if you figure out how to get it goin give me a shout

the computer but i still cant get MSN 6 voice to work and i cant get
conference to work either, even though i can get webcam to work

no firewall enabled
DCHP is enabled
NAT is enabled, but DMZ isnt

would it be easier to have the ethernet card auto detect my my IP
