I've got one computer that refuses to play alert sounds
for contacts or messages. I get pop up windows with text
above the system tray, but no sounds.

The play sounds option is checked, there are sounds
listed under MSN Messenger, the play button plays these
sounds.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled with no change. My
sound card works, as AOL IM sounds play, MSN Messenger
voice calls work, etc.

Anything I can do or check RegEdit wise that maybe is
preventing sounds?

^^^ BUMP ^^^

Any ideas? Sound card works, speakers work. Running MSN MEssenger 6 on
XP Pro. Text pop up alerts display, just no sounds. Sounds are checked
as on in Preferences. Five other machines work fine, just this one
doesn't work as expected.

Found and fixed. Used following solution:

Click on the start button. Go to Run Type in regedit

Once registry editor has opened up left click on the Hkey_Current_User key.
In the right hand area you will find a binary string value that says
Name: (default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: VALUE NOT SET

Now if your data does NOT say value not set simply right click on the
default string and delete. Windows will immedately create you a new
one. Restart your computer and you should hear sounds.

Somebody help me, Please!
I am a new user to windows XP. I have some computer skills, but am not a geek by any strech of the imagination. I performed all the sugested fixes for the no sound upon new mail notification in outlook express. I did the registry thing and my registry key already says VALUE NOT SET. "What now?"
I set all the necessary checks in the sounds file of the control panel. I checked the allow sounds for new mail from the drop down in outlook express.
I'm pulling what there is left of my hair out. My computer is about a week old and has never played sound for new mail notification in outlook express. Everything else appears to be ok. Oh, no, wait, I also can't get the notification on the task bar that says, if or how many, new mail messages have come in. Can anyone help me out here?
