since I downloaded and began using windows messenger I
have the problem thatI now have msn messenger operating
as a separate programme!Normally when you upgrade there
is no problem. I need to know what do do.Do I delete msn
messenger or windows messenger? Why have these programmes
not integrated themselves as usual?
any thoughts ,ideas , even guesses would be much
appreciated.

Greetings Jim,
MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are separate products, which is why you have both
installed. MSN Messenger is *not* an upgrade to Windows Messenger.
You can use whichever one you want, but if you just want one Messenger client installed, just
use Windows Messenger (MSN Messenger can be installed from Add or Remove Programs in the
Control Panel). If you remove Windows Messenger, some features like Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard and Application Sharing will not work in MSN Messenger (and in Windows).

I seem to have both vying for ascendency. One will sign
itself on randomly and cut off the other.
I would like to use msn messenger as it seems to have more
features but can't seem to stop windows messenger from
jumping in.
cheers

Hi,
To stop Windows Messenger from "jumping in", you can just disable Windows Messenger 4.7, by
opening it up, click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and unchecking 'Run this program when
Windows starts'. This won't stop it from being loaded by some other application though. As
well, you can disable it further by going to Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs,
Add/Remove Windows Components on the left, uncheck Windows Messenger in the components list
and click Next >. Note: this is only available if you've installed Windows XP Service Pack
1 -- if you haven't, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This won't remove Windows
Messenger, but it will let it stay out of your way, and allow MSN Messenger to work properly.
As well, if you're an Outlook Express user, to stop Windows Messenger from loading with
Outlook Express, just close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg
Finally, if you use Norton Antivirus 2003, a feature in NAV will automatically start Windows
Messenger. To stop Norton Antivirus from using Windows Messenger, open Norton Antivirus
(Right click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the
clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck
MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.
