View Full Version : Windows Messenger Starting Up When I Dial In

I am currently using Windows Messenger 4.7 under XP Pro.
Now this problem has only recently occured in the past
weeks and I cannot find a way to fix it. I have every
option that relates to Windows Messenger turned off so
that it will not startup with any application (Windows,
Outlook Express, Windows Messenger itself, etc..). This
doesn't mean I don't use it; I do, just that I like to run
it manually. However, everytime I dial into my MSN
Internet Access account, Windows Messenger starts up but
the icon doesn't show up on the system tray. I know that
it starts up cause it tells me how many new email messages
I have. In order to make the icon appear in the system
tray, I have to open Outlook Express. Now what I want to
know is how do I prevent Windows Messenger from signing in
every single time I dial into my ISP? It is so annoying.

Greetings James,

Unfortunately if you're using MSN Explorer, Windows Messenger will automatically start but if
you're using a normal "Dial Up Networking" account for MSN, there's no reason it should
start. Since you don't see the icon, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed, Norton
added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict
with Messenger and cause this behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the
Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open
Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger
and click OK.

Thanks you so much Jonathan! I think that fixed the
problem. I never realized that having Norton AV 2003
protect MSN Messenger would force the program to start up
and sign in everytime I dialed into my isp. But thanks for
the help. I appreciate it.
